Off-Topic: Comic Book Reviews For 9-24-2014

DC's BATMAN BEYOND UNIVERSE #14
The Phantasm storyline concludes as we learn more about the history behind the split between Batman and his earlier apprentices (Robin and Batgirl), which subsequently deepens the complexity of Batman Beyond's relationship with Bruce Wayne. The storytelling here was poignant and engaging, though I felt the pacing left something to be desired. It is hard to explain, but the story felt choppy somehow, as did the side stories that went along with it. I like that Terry is working with his counterpart from the other Gotham (in the Justice Lords Universe), and all in all there is a lot to like here.

DC's JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK: FUTURE'S END One-Shot
Five years hence, in the Future's End timeline, Zatanna and her crew are trapped in a nameless dimension, assaulted by all manner of evil. They are searching desperately for a way home, and Zatanna has become a darker, colder kind of leader along the way. The most interesting part of this issue, however, is the relationship between Zatanna and the demon Etrigan. Wow, was their dialogue good. This is a very good issue, and is the best FUTURE'S END issue I've read so far. It is certainly the best paced.

Marvel's NEW WARRIORS #10
This was the best comic book I got this week. I simply loved this book. I loved the fact that the Warriors are encountering the High Evolutionary again, and that we are learning more about the coming assault by the Celestials. On every level, this book works, though the art continues to be good but not great. I especially liked the way Speedball takes center stage. He and Scarlet Spider are my two favorite new WARRIORS.

DC's BATMAN '66 #14
The writers of this comic book continue to take the classic, campy Batman from the 60s in all new directions. The Penguin and a new character, Black Widow, team up to cause Gotham no end of trouble. The art in this issue is not as good as it has been, but it is still solid. I also didn't like (*SPOILER ALERT) the ease with which Penguin turns on Black Widow. Still, this book continues to be one of the best things DC has to offer.

DC's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #19
We continue to learn what happened between Star Lord and Thanos in the Cancerverse, as a mad battle for the Cosmic Cube begins. This issue is awesome, as we learn the Cancerverse prevents any of the combatants from ever dying. This leads to both horror and hilarity. The only thing I didn't like in this issue was the dialogue between Gamora and Peter Quill, as Peter recounts the story of the Cancerverse episode to her. There was just no clear motivations in what was being said.

Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS #31
Punisher has developed some Hulk-busting weapons for his final battle with Thunderbolt Ross while Hawkeye has decided to play cop, trying to arrest the entire THUNDERBOLTS team. We finally get a clear view of what has really been going on, as The Leader is revealed to be the true mastermind behind the war between Punisher and the rest of the team. There is some good and some bad here, but I really am upset that we aren't seeing more Deadpool or Ghost Rider. I hope we get a turn for the better with those two characters.
