WONDERFALLS Bible Study Week 6

Episode 6- Muffin Buffalo
Exodus 4:10-17
Moses, however, said to the Lord, “If you please, my Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor now that you have spoken to your servant; but I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11 The Lord said to him: Who gives one person speech? Who makes another mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go, I will assist you in speaking and teach you what you are to say. 13 But he said, “If you please, my Lord, send someone else!” 14 Then the Lord became angry with Moses and said: I know there is your brother, Aaron the Levite, who is a good speaker; even now he is on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will truly be glad. 15 You will speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will assist both you and him in speaking and teach you both what you are to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you: he will be your spokesman, and you will be as God to him. 17 Take this staff in your hand; with it you are to perform the signs.

Sirach 3:17-24
My son, conduct your affairs with humility,
    and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
18 Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
    and you will find mercy in the sight of God.
20 For great is the power of the Lord;
    by the humble he is glorified.
21 What is too sublime for you, do not seek;
    do not reach into things that are hidden from you.
22 What is committed to you, pay heed to;
    what is hidden is not your concern.
23 In matters that are beyond you do not meddle,
    when you have been shown more than you can understand.
24 Indeed, many are the conceits of human beings;
    evil imaginations lead them astray.

Isaiah 38:7-8
This will be the sign for you from the Lord that the Lord will carry out the word he has spoken: See, I will make the shadow cast by the sun on the stairway to the terrace of Ahaz go back the ten steps it has advanced. So the sun came back the ten steps it had advanced.

Matthew 21:23-27
23 When he had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things?[ And who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus said to them in reply, “I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Where was John’s baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?” They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.” 27 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” He himself said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Reflect on the Bible passages in light of the episode.

Reflect on this quote: “we’re all spying on freaks tonight.”

Reflect on the dichotomy of Jaye and her brother Aaron: who they are as people, what drives their
lives, etc.

Compare and contrast this with Moses’ situation with his brother.

What do you think of Jaye keeping the checks a secret?

Why does Mahandra say Jaye admires Fat Pat? Does she? Why or why not?

Reflect on this quote: “who are you talking to? I don’t help people.”

What does the psychiatrist say about talking to inanimate objects?

What does Aaron think of Jaye’s experiences?

What do we learn about Aaron’s beliefs?

What do you think of this?

What ‘worries’ Aaron, really, do you think?

Why might Jaye’s possible connection with God bother Aaron?

Why was Jesus’ claim to religious authority so bothersome to some people?

Reflect on the entire conversation about religious authority in light of the dichotomy of Aaron and
Jaye?

How is Jaye’s experience like Moses? How is it different?

How is Jaye’s brother’s experience like Moses’ brother?

What do you think of Jaye ‘saving’ that man’s sobriety?

What is it like when Pat discovers Jaye’s ‘interest’ in him?

What is Pat like?

What is the result of game night?

How could someone with Pat’s struggles have wound up so arrogant?

How do we try to avoid this?

How can the Sirach passage help us avoid it?

Reflect on this quote: “I haven’t changed, my situation has changed.”

What happens in the doctor’s office that begins to change Aaron’s mind?

Compare this to the way God contacts Ahaz?

Reflect on this quote: “there’s something out there that’s laughing at us.”

What does Aaron say about meaning and the meaning of the universe?

Why does Jaye’s family want to celebrate her award and why does she reject it?

Reflect on Aaron coming to Jaye and seeking her wisdom?

What do you think of Pat’s backsliding?

Reflect on this quote: “Stop thanking me…what is it with you people?”

Reflect on this quote, particular in light of Jaye’s situation and Moses’: “you have the wrong idea
about you.”
