DC's BATMAN 66 #10
Mr. Freeze was always my favorite character in the old BATMAN TV show, and finally he makes his debut on the pages of BATMAN 66. It was worth the wait. As someone who comes from a sweltering city, and is fascinated by recent turns in personal air conditioning, some of the technology in the issue intrigued me. This issue was less comical than some earlier issues, though it remains primarily tongue-in-cheek. The extra Batgirl story at the end worked well, also. That it was in continuity with earlier Batman issues was also interesting. All in all, a good book.

Marvel's SILVER SURFER #2
The new Silver Surfer comic continues to deliver. I like this very tight and original story. The mystery surrounding the Surfer's connection to the random kidnapped earthling intrigues me, while the action and comedy that are the main thrust of the storytelling work very well indeed. The pacing in this book is a bit off, and the art is only middle of the road, but overall the book works very well.

DC's BATMAN BEYOND UNIVERSE #9
The old Justice League animated television show once had this storyline about alternative universe "Justice Lords" that came to dominate their version of Earth. Here that storyline is revisited to dazzling effect. There is mystery here, and suspense, and it just works on every level. That there are some parallels to the FUTURE'S END comic book cannot be denied, and it reminds me of the dynamic that existed on Earth 2 during the FOREVER EVIL line. Still, this comic is doing some amazing things, and I am very impressed. The pacing in this one was even solid, and the other issues have had a problem with that aspect.

Marvel's ROCKET RACCOON #1
It seems that everyone's favorite space-faring mutant raccoon is getting a book of his own. This free first issue really rocked, and brought back some of my favorite characters from Rocket's early years. The pacing in this book was off, but besides that it was a good book. Like GUARDIANS, it is the dialogue that takes center stage here but actually, the storyline was pretty good too, though a little derivative of STAR WARS. Heck, if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

DC's FUTURE'S END #0
This kicks off yet another universe-spanning crossover for DC. Marvel's ORIGINAL SIN is also just getting started, so both companies continue their endless line of 'the universe will never be the same' uber story arcs. I will not be collecting this book, but I have to say the story, its really freaking good. I wanted to hate it, but it was so good. Yet I feel I have to stop investing myself in these uber arcs. It just tends to ruin other books I'm reading.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY One-Shot
In the most recent issue of GUARDIANS it was revealed that the Avengers had sent Venom to be a liaison with the team. This issue recounts how that happened. But that story is tangential to the real purpose of this issue: giving a brief introduction to readers of what the team is and what is about. This was very well done and this is a great issue for anyone who is unfamiliar with the Guardians but want to learn more. As this is a free comic book from Free Comic Book Day, I recommend picking it up.
