Off-Topic: Comic Book Reviews For 12-17-2014

DC's JUSTICE LEAGUE #37
We learn more about the Amazo Virus, and about the seemingly unstoppable "Patient Zero" as Lex Luthor continues to show a depth of character I scarcely thought was possible. I would've thought any attempt to present Lex this way would lose believability or continuity, but none of that has happened. Still, I'd like more Captain Cold and a LOT more Shazam. This book didn't move the story forward much, but the character development is solid.

DC's THUNDERWORLD One-Shot (Multiversity #5)
This was one of the best MULTIVERSITY books to date. I am a huge, HUGE Shazam fan and I especially like the classic storylines, which have an innocence to them that modern comic books often lack. This book visits a DC universe that contains the classic Shazam characters. On every level, this book works. It has just the right mix of nostalgia and innovation. But it is the art that really stands out. The colors, the classic images, they simply elevate the spirit. I highly recommend the MULTIVERSITY storyline, but this book is also a very effective stand alone.

DC GREEN LANTERN: THE NEW GUARDIANS #37
The GODHEAD Crossover continues as Kyle Rayner teams up with Malhedron and John Stewart. Their first group assault does not appear to be very effective, though High Father seems to be more and more corrupted by his power, a corruption that is causing more in his own ranks to work against him. This issue seemed a little stale, though there was at least some solid character development. It was by no means bad, but it wasn't good as some other GODHEAD issues.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY # 22
The Guardians are facing a threat from one of their own as Venom's symbiote begins attacking various members of the team. This issue didn't have as much humor as I usually like, though I did like the storyline in the overall. This book has been going a good direction, though some of the roster changes get a little tedious.

DC's TEEN TITANS #5
This book is absolutely righteous. I am just loving the direction this team is going, and it is all but 180 degrees from the last incarnation of the Titans. There is plenty of mystery and intrigue and they are developing the characters with care and energy. There is also enough action to keep me interested and the art is solid. This book has everything that makes a comic book good. It hasn't had any mind-blowing moments yet, but it has all the elements of a book that works. This was a good issue of a good book.
