Off-Topic: Comic Book Reviews

Marvel's NEW WARRIORS #5
We continue with the tight, focused storytelling with some ever-expanding mysteries surrounding some of the Warriors as our heroes undertake clean-up duty after their battle with the High Evolutionary. We get hints of mysteries surrounding Speedball and Namorita not to mention more focus on a gathering Celestial threat (see my recent review of Thunderbolts, as well as NEW Warriors #1-4). The art work in this book isn't the best, but the pacing is getting better and the dialogue and storytelling are solid. All-in-all, a strong book so far.

DC's EARTH 2 #24
Finally, Green Lantern is back in full swing and boy is he kicking butt. This is Alan Scott at his best, reminding me why he's my favorite GL. Meanwhile, the (super powered) Jimmy Olsen gives the new Batman a much-needed talking to, which includes some top notch dialogue writing. This book continues to deliver. The art is still very strong, and everything else is working. Despite this being a VERY long story arc, the pacing does not feel off. We are not dealing with some of the problems we had in those books affected by FOREVER EVIL. I just hope we get some resolution soon. I want to see these characters in action in some other contexts.

Boom Comics' BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA #1
What a great idea this book is! The film leaves on a note that screams sequel, but we never got one. The execution is not great, but it is not terrible either. I didn't feel the characters are the same characters here as in the film. There is no reason we have to 'comicize' characters in comics. This medium can handle more than this book delivers. However, there is some potential. Some of the comedy worked and there were some individual scenes that worked. I am going to be getting at least a few more issues, hoping this book takes off.

Dynamite and DC's BATMAN '66 VS THE GREEN HORNET #1 of 6
One of my favorite directors, writers and commentators on pop and nerd culture, Kevin Smith, helms an amibitious and fun project here. One of the best episodes of the original BATMAN TV Show was the crossover with THE GREEN HORNET. The properties are owned by different companies but they have come together here to allow a brilliant man begin a story that already has me completely drawn in. Everything is just beginning here, but so far this has all the comedic power of the ongoing BATMAN '66 book with some added depth with the added characters. I love it.
