Off-Topic: Comic Book Reviews For 9-15-2014

Marvel's EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5
The EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE crossover ends and the SPIDER-VERSE crossover is about to begin. This final issue in the series is even more japanime-inspired. In this world, Peter's daughter is a Spider-Girl weapon working officially with the government to stop villains like Mysterio. She has an expanded Spider-Armor and a kind of spider familiar that accompanies her. This book was good, but the pacing was off. However, towards the end the Spectacular Spider-Ham made an appearance and that elevated the overall, for me. I will continue the SPIDER-VERSE adventure as long as it keeps putting out quality material, which so far is what it has done.

DC's TEEN TITANS #3
I simply love this new incarnation of the Titans, it is a big improvement over what came before. Here Raven discovers a band that was inspired by her, and Wonder Girl encounters a gang inspired by her. Bunker and Beast Boy continue to play very central roles, and I am enjoying their friendship. The story telling here is pretty tight, and very character-driven. But the pacing was a bit off. Still, a good comic overall.

DC's JUSTICE LEAGUE #35
We learn more about Lex Luthor as the team tries to use their new found access to him to find some way to take him down legally. The dialogue between Lex and Bruce Wayne is fantastic, as is the dialogue between Shazam and Cyborg and the interplay between Flash and Power Ring. I sure hope we get some more comics focused on Shazam soon because I'm just starved for more stuff with him at the center. The pacing in this comic was a bit off but everything else I enjoyed.

DC's GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #35
The Godhead storyline continues as the New Gods reach Kyle Rayner and quickly dispatch the new Guardians who accompany him on his journeys. Their interaction with Kyle is more diplomatic than it has been with other corps members and I liked the expanded exploration of the nature of the Life Equation and the breadth of Rayner's powers. As with so many books this week, the pacing felt off.

Marvel's SPIDER-MAN 2099 #5
This was the best paced book I read today. I am just loving how Miguel is developing as a character. As he begins to influence what will become Alchemax in his own time, all around him dark forces are gathering. Alternate universe versions of himself are being offed by the Spider-Verse villains and  Miguel is mysteriously aware of it. On every level, I liked this book, except the art which left something to be desired.

DC's EARTH 2: WORLD'S END #2
This new weekly comic continues to explore the ongoing battle between Apokalypse and Earth-2. I sure would like some more exploration of these characters in other contexts, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. All the villains introduced are Darkseid's minions and the character development that roped me in in issue 1 has slowed to a crawl. Still, this book works on a number of levels. I like it, though I don't know if I want to sign on for a weekly book.
