Off-Topic: Comic Book Reviews For 10-1-2014

DC's GODHEAD One-Shot
This is a crossover between the New Gods (Darkseid's ancient people and rivals) and the Lantern Series (all of them). The New Gods' leaders have been searching for a long time for the Life Equation as Darkseid seeks The Anti-Live Equation. They believe they have found it on Earth-1 in the hands of the various lantern corps. This will be an ongoing crossover that I will be collecting. This first issue set everything up nicely. There is plenty of mystery, a big cosmic context to everything, and a strong dualistic overtone that should make for some great theological reflection down the road. I'll probably be doing an in-depth review of the overall series when it is done. Here we have some great dialogue, and a clever story set-up. For those who know a lot about the White Lantern, this book will make a lot of sense. But you will need some background to be able to navigate the story. The pacing in the book was a little off and the art was not great, but overall I still liked the book a lot.

DC's JUSTICE LEAGUE #34
The inclusion of Lex Luthor into the League continues as we learn Batman has some ultimate plan to take Luthor down. There was some Shazam in this issue, but not enough. I am really upset that Shazam isn't getting more focus here, and I hope they correct this in the future. I did like the way the new Power Ring is being turned into a weapon for good. There is an exchange between Wonder Woman and Luthor that was really well done too. The pacing was off in this issue, though and the Captain Cold storyline went a direction I did not like. Overall, this was a good book, but not as great as what has been delivered the last few issues.

Marvel's EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #3
We continue the exploration of the various Spider-Men through the Marvel Multiverse with a kind of Japanese Anime-inspired technoworld. Now the art isn't exactly anime style, but the story telling was very reminiscent of that genre. Spider-Man in this world has a very expansive, almost Iron Man like arsenal of spider-armor. On every level, this book worked. It was well-paced, and it had an interesting storyline. This was simply a great book and a part of a great crossover-series, far superior to many of the 'universe will never be the same' crossovers I've seen in other books recently.

Marvel's EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #4
I found it strange that Marvel put out two SPIDER-VERSE comics in the same week. I'm sure glad they did. This came from a horror type universe, and Spider-Man in this book is pure villain. Uncle Ben is transformed into an abusive guardian, and Peter is a sociopathic serial killer in training, who becomes something of a werespider. This book was genuinely frightening, with art that perfectly matched the dark storyline and even darker but VERY effective dialogue. The only thing off about this book was it wasn't paced as good as issue 3, but on every other level it was as good as issue 1, which remains my favorite so far.

DC's BATMAN '66 MEETS THE GREEN HORNET #5
Batman and Robin are finally forced by the powers that be to work with Green Hornet and Kato as they continue to battle General Gumm and Joker.  God I love this book, all these Batman '66 books continue to do some original things with these classic characters. Funny, campy, but still trying to develop characters in a new way, this book just works. When this series comes out as a trade paperback, make sure to pick it up.

Marvel's SPIDER-MAN 2099 #4
The adventures of Miguel O'hara continue as Spider-Man 2099 faces off with Pete's old foe, The Scorpion and an army of Spider-Slayers. I just love how O'hara approaches his enemies differently than the present-day spidey, and here that works to some great story telling effect. I especially like the cover art for this book which consistently blows my mind. It's funny, right now I'm collecting more Spider-Man comics than I ever have. Yet the main Peter Parker storylines continue to disappoint me.
