Random Biblical Fun:
I am a big fan of STAR WARS and I love Bible, and one of my favorite things to do is to draw Biblical references from pop culture phenomena. As you can imagine, Biblical STAR WARS references pop up a lot in my head. Here's one:
In EPISODE 4: A NEW HOPE Luke and Wedge Antilles are being told that the Death Star can only be destroyed firing a proton torpedo through an opening only two meters wide. Wedge calls this impossible, Luke replies, "It's not impossible. I used to bull's-eye womp rats in my T-sixteen back home. They're not much bigger than two meters." Many experienced fighters try to take on the feat, and fail, either dying or running out of torpedoes. Luke approaches the space station for his run on the ship's weakness. He is supposed to use a targeting computer to make the shot, but as he's about to choose to rely on the equipment he hears Obi-Wan's voice cry out "use the force Luke". Luke, much to the dismay of his ground control associates, leaves his computer off. He uses the force, makes the shot, and the Death Start is destroyed.
In I SAMUEL 17, Israel's warriors are being taunted by the greatest, biggest, and baddest of the Philistine's men, Goliath. A young baby-faced boy named David demands the opportunity to meet Goliath's insulting challenge to the men of Israel to decide the conflict through single combat. Saul reluctantly agrees, but tries to force David to take his armor and weapons. David replies that these things don't fit and don't feel right, and that back home he had killed lions and bears with far less, and that he would stick with the weapons he knew: sling, stone and faith in the LORD. Pronouncing that battle is not won by weapons but by faith in God, David slings the stone at Goliath and kills him.
Both David and Luke are farm boys who have been thrust into conflicts well beyond anything they have known before. Both rely on their past experience on the farms to justify their confidence in facing a challenge of seeming overwhelming proportions. Both rely not on the greatest technology of the day but on "Something Bigger" than themselves, and both win the day despite overwhelming odds. The story of the destruction of the Death Star in STAR WARS, EPISODE 4: A NEW HOPE may be the greatest representation of the story of David and Goliath on screen ever!
